Carry On Cleo Poster

A rare original Carry On Cleo UK 1-Sheet (measuring 27"x 40") bearing the withdrawn Chantrell artwork. Following their successful spoofing of the James Bond franchise with "Carry on Spying", the Carry On producers siezed on the chance to spoof 1963's blockbuster "Cleopatra" (starring Liz Taylor & Richard Burton). However, when Chantrell composed a poster showing Amanda Barrie reclining on a chaise longe (inspired by a publicity shot of Elizabeth Taylor doing the same in "Cleopatra"), 20th Century Fox mounted a legal challenge. Chantrell's posters were recalled & pulped & an inferior design (showing Sid James as a sphinx) was hastily thrown together. The number of UK posters bearing Chantrell's original artwork are no more than a handful. For the full story, see Sim Branaghan's "British Film Posters" book. The example here remains in rare unfolded condition. There are various conservation repairs to the reverse to small edge nicks etc & an area of restoration to the left border next to the script "The Funniest Film...". Nonetheless, the poster remains in great display condition as can be seen. The printer credited bottom left is RJ Wallman & Co Ltd.
