Dick Poster

An unusual video poster (16 1/2"x 23") for the short 14 mins documentary by Jo Menell "Dick" (1990). As the poster depiction suggests, the film was a documentary about male genitalia, essentially photos of numerous dicks being commented on by various women interviewees. By all accounts, the film is humorous & somewhat deflating for the corporate male ego. This was Menell's first film but more serious fare was to follow & in 1997 Menell was Oscar nominated for his documentary "Mandela".

Although "Dick" was released as a film, being so short (& given the "specialist" nature of the film), meant it would only have played in a few art-house cinemas. A film poster does exist, however, in the Oakland Museum of CA (see http://collections.museumca.org/?q=collection-item/2010544733) & the UK video poster, as shown here, replicates the design. The UK video release followed just 4 months after the UK "cinematic" release, with 3 seconds cut (the mind boggles!). Again, given the very niche scope of the video, the commercial potential was strictly limited & very few posters were printed. This particular poster came from an ex-Island Press Officer & has never been used.

This poster will not be to everyone's taste & probably best viewed before you've had your breakfast cornflakes but for anyone with a sense of humour, it's a hoot. It is also very, very rare & remains in near mint rolled condition.
