Ivan The Terrible Poster

A UK Quad poster for the debut 1959 release of Eisenstein's's drama "Ivan The Terrible". Conceived as a trilogy & commissioned by Stalin, Part I was originally released in Soviet Russia in 1944 but Part II was banned by Stalin & not released till 1958 (Eisenstein died before Part III could be made). The film is generally regarded as one of THE classics of world cinema. This silk-screen poster boasts the highly distinctive artwork by Peter Strausfield & was a bespoke poster created specially for the arts cinema, The Academy, in London. The print run for this poster would have been small.

Strausfield was a German emigre who worked as the in-house poster designer for The Academy 1947-80. Strausfield's posters were based on woodcut or linocut designs & are characteristically stark but extremely effective.

The poster has two conservation repairs to edge tears (longest 3") & minor paper loss to bottom left corner. Apart from a very faint vertical fold the poster has escaped machine-folding & overall remains in very good condition. An important poster rich with Russian cultural history.
