King Kong (1933) Poster

A scarce linen-backed US 1-sheet poster for a 1968 re-release of the original 1933 film "King Kong". Distributed by American art-house movie specialists "Janus Films", the print run for this poster would have been modest compared to regular NSS American releases.

Janus Films regularly used the Denver based company "Dot Graphics Ltd" for their poster designs, "King Kong" being a design/illustration by Lee Reedy (co-founder of Dot Graphics). The poster features the eponymous ape clutching a barely decent Fay Wray, the imagery resonating with the counter-culture graphics of the time (echoes of Robert Crumb). This was probably not simply an artistic device but a commercial decision, the film clearly aimed at a youthful student-type audience. Lee Reedy later transitioned over to the fine arts market becoming a leading exponent of art of the American West.

The poster trumpets the "uncut" version of the film, the opportunity to kick-back against "suppression" also being an obvious come-on for the targeted demographic. Until this 1968 re-release, re-releases since 1933 had witnessed successive cuts. The majority of the censorship focused on scenes of violence but King Kong's inquisitive peeling off layers of Fay Wray's clothing was also an early victim of the new moral code. Students of 1968 were thus treated to significantly more horror & sexual titillation than had been available to viewers since the film had first screened 35 years beforehand.

The poster has undegone linen-backing & some restoration to the lower text area (some residual staining & re-painted text in areas of previous surface papere loss here). An intriguing poster & although a re-release, this is already 50 years old itself!
