Ocean's Eleven Poster

The legendary Rat Pack of the 1960s is now seen as the epitome of classy suaveness. Featuring the likes of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davies Jr, the group were hugely popular and influential in their live singing performances as well as in their films. Perhaps the best known of their big screen outings, 1960’s “Ocean’s 11” had Sinatra, Martin, Davis, Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop performing five Las Vegas casino robberies in one night.

Filming proved strenuous with the starring cast often performing nights at the Sands hotel and casino (sometimes several times a night). Furthermore, given that Las Vegas barred coloured people from staying in any of the major hotels, Sammy Davis was forced to stay at a ‘coloured only’ hotel even after performing at the Sands alongside the others. Frank Sinatra reportedly confronted the casino owners who then subsequently relented.

Whilst Japanese posters often offer different designs to that of their western counterparts, in this instance the Japanese B2 poster bears a close resemblance to the US 1-Sheet (shown below courtesy of emovieposter.com). This is perhaps testament to the star status of the Rat Pack as the same simple, stylish snap-shot images of the main cast are used. The only major difference between the posters is how the B2 switches Angie Dickinson and Sammy Davis Jr’s positions; presumably believing the formers sultry looks a bigger draw and more appropriate centre-piece amongst the leading men.
