Reach For The Sky

Original painted artwork (11"x 15") for "Reach For The Sky" (1956), the classic WWII film about the legless RAF fighter ace, Douglas Bader. The UK poster campaign (Quad, Double-Crown & UK 3-Sheets) were executed by the Italian artist Angelo Cesselon & an associated 1957 Fontana book release (see below) was also based on Cesselon's design. The artwork presented here shows very subtle variations but is believed to be a highly finished concept piece for the book release, possibly also by Cesselon. We are unaware of any other artwork having survived for this film.

The artwork is painted (in oils?) directly onto "Rathbone" Canvas Board & carries both the makers sticker (marked 4 Shillings) plus the High Wycombe retailers stamp to the reverse. This piece was acquired in 2013 from the son of an advertising executive who was involved in the film poster industry in the 1950's-1980's.
