The Anniversary Poster

UK Quad poster for hammer's "The anniversary" (1968). Hollywood icon Bette Davis was very much THE star of this 1968 the film. Being a lady who was very set in her ways, Ms. Davis caused problems on the shoot, the first director being sacked after Ms Davis demanded his removal. Hammer stalwart Roy Ward Baker stepped in instead.
The Chantrell poster is an interesting composition. In keeping with the gravitas of the leading lady, Bette Davis occupies key position on the poster. However, Chantrell provides a box-shot photo taken from the film on the right hand side. The colour scheme (green & blues) adds to the haunting mood & the unusual eye-patch compounds the feeling of unease & mystery. The artwork here looks uncharacteristically primitive for Chantrell. When compared with Chantrell's original prototype artwork (see below), one can see that the poster is an extremely close match. It is possible that the spartan style of the "rough" appealed to Hammer executives & that Chantrell was simply instructed to finish but to maintain both the style & design of the prototype.

The poster has a 1/2" conservation tape repair to edge nick on right rim & a few very light marks but overall appears in excellent condition & remains one of the more affordable Chantrell Hammer posters.
