The Camp On Blood Island Poster

UK Quad poster for Hammer's "The Camp On Blood Island" (1958). Although the horrific subject matter maintained a tenuous link with Hammer's usual "Horror" remit, the film fits better within the war film genre.

This poster was banned by London Transport for being too graphic (see Sim Branaghan's book "British Film Posters" 2006). Coming just 13 years after VJ Day, the gruesome imagery proved too much for the censors of the day. The John Stocke poster was pulled & an alternative quickly distributed. The replacement poster pictured a Japanese guard & his sword superimposed against the backdrop of a red/yellow image of a rising sun (the illustration of the sadistic grimace on the guard's face & blood red sword, both being removed). Both posters are rare but the original version shown here is extremely difficult to find.

The poster has a few small tape marks to corners/rim, the "X" certificate has been neartly blanked out & there is a 3" conservation repair to a tear through the name "Andre Morell" but overall it remains in very good condition.
