Withnail and I Poster

A true cult collectable. Although moderately successful on release in 1987, "Withnail & I" was far from a commercial blockbuster, with a UK gross of just £565,000. In subsequent years the film developed a huge following & this black-comedy is now regarded as a British masterpiece. When Richard E Grant's script appeared in a 2000 charity auction it sold for £7,000 to "Four Weddings & a Funeral" writer, Richard Curtis, a sign of the esteem & affection with which the film is regarded.

The poster for the film is thankfully superlative too, featuring original artwork by Ralph Steadman. Better known as a political cartoonist, Steadman's spidery illustration is highly idiosyncratic & is exemplified here.

"Withnail & I" has the distinction of coming from the roster of ex-Beatle George Harrison's "Handmade Films". A somewhat overlooked aspect of Harrison's cultural legacy but Handmade bank-rolled 23 films in total including other British classics such as "The Long Good Friday" (1980), "Mona Lisa" (1986) & the highly controversial "Monty Python's Life of Brian" (1979).

The poster here is rare in any condition but this example is unfolded & probably as close to mint as you will find anywhere.
