Work Is A Four Letter Word

This is a very curious piece of original Vic Fair poster artwork (19 1/2"x 27"). Designed for the 1968 British comedy "Work Is A Four Letter Word", the paint/ink design being applied to plastic, which in turn has been assembled on conventional artboard. Vic Fair was an ever inventive artist so it is possible that the unconventional choice of materials here, is an example of his constant experimentation. The artwork presents a potpourri of 1960's psychedelia (this quite fitting given the role of hallucinogenic mushrooms in the film). Interestingly, the American approach (see the US 1-sheet below courtesy of emovieposter.com), took a similar line, though Vic Fair's piece is more cutting-edge.

It is unclear whether this artwork was ever used & it appears to be more a design for a double-crown & UK 1-sheet format anyway. The known Quad poster for the film was radically different in that it was far more simplistic & orthodox (see below). It is possible that the blatant "druggie" connotations of Fair's design, proved too much for the distributiors. Many of Fair's designs in the 1960's-70's were axed for being too provocative or subsequently toned down.

Interestingly to the reverse is a Vic Fair doodle for another 1968 film "A Lovely way To Die" (subsequently released in the UK as "A Lovely Way To Go").
